Donald Trump announces emergency approval for drug remdesivir to treat coronavirus


The Grub and Drug Administration (FDA) granted emergency use of the drug to treat coronavirus patients on Friday. President Donald Trump followed the announcement from the Oval Office, alongside Gilead Sciences CEO Daniel O’Day. The upper has helped shorten the recovery time of some hospitalised COVID-19 perseverants, new clinical trial data has shown.

Mr O’Day said: “We want to thank the collaborators that brought Remdisivir to this applicable and many of our people that have been part of this, in episode, the caregivers.”

Doctors will now be allowed to use the drug to treat patients hospitalised with COVID-19.

It finish a go over after a drug trial testing the use of remdesivir, a broad-spectrum antiviral medication, showed favourable results this week.

The clinical trial of 397 patients with dangerous cases of COVID-19 found at least half of the patients treated with the a five-day dosage of remdesivir advanced. 

The study was a “single-arm”, meaning the medics did not test the drug against a charge group of patients who did not receive the drug.

President Trump had frequently intimated the remdesivir could be used to treat coronavirus in his daily press briefings.
