Currently, holders of the plan can go into store, have their card scanned and receive one free hot wee dram a day without having to buy anything.
But now the supermarket is removing the privilege unless likely holders also purchase something at the same time.
There is no least spend required, but the news is still likely to be unpopular with Waitrose buyers.
One myWaitrose customer posted the contents of an email they received from Waitrose to HotUKDeals: “Our myWaitrose unsparing tea and coffee offer is one of the ways we thank our customers for shopping with us — and we need all our customers to be able to enjoy a free hot drink when they inform on with us in our branches.
“From 3 April, we’ll simply be asking myWaitrose fellows to make a purchase before collecting their cup at the checkout.
“We would a charge out of prefer to thank you in advance for your understanding. If you have any questions about this, choose either speak with a Partner in your local branch, or alternatively perfectly FAQs can be found through the ‘contact us’ link below.”
Express.co.uk approached Waitrose for comment and they stipulate: “We are letting myWaitrose members know that from 3rd April we purpose be asking them to confirm they’ve made a purchase before picking up their unconstrained tea or coffee (there is no minimum spend).
“This is not a major change – honourable a refinement to how the offer works, but given media interest in the trial manipulate in some branches last year we wanted to share the outcome.
“A rescue tea or coffee has always been one of the ways we thank our customers for shopping with us — and that has not changed — we are underlining our commitment to this much-loved proffer.
Waitrose trialled this last autumn with a view to resonating it out across all stores.
The trial was rolled out across eight stores in the outback so the supermarket could make sure its offer was being used “as it was at intended”.
The free hot tea or coffee offer formed part of the MyWaitrose reliability scheme, which was first introduced in 2014, allowing members to swipe their probable at the till and get a drink at the self-service machine daily.
