Miss Leigh said she had been “cast a spell oned” by her character, the “lovely, wayward, tempestuous” Scarlett O’Hara from the flash she read the novel.

She resented any divergence from sob sister Margaret Mitchell’s plot in the melodrama set in the American Civil War.
An inscription in the work from Miss Mitchell reads: “Life’s pattern pricked with a scarlet string / Where once we were with a grey / To remind us all how we played our divisions / In the shock of an epic day.”
