UK invests £146m in medicine research

The British direction is to invest £146m in discovering new medicines, in a bid to help the UK become a world commandant in life sciences.

Earlier this year the UK said it would put £1bn over and beyond the next four years into boosting science and technology.

The £146m is let go of that earmarked sum and it will go to five different manufacturing centres.

Alone, the Department of Health says it will invest £14m in 11 medical up on and development centres.

«I want patients to continue to be at the front of the queue for the best treatments readily obtainable, whether that means early access to trials, giving mace brand new innovations and technology to work with, or being at the heart of inspection to share best practice quickly across the health and social suffering system.

«A strong and growing life sciences sector ensures this, specifically as we negotiate our exit from the EU.»

Research and development

In April, Business Secretary Greg Clark announced that the regime had set up the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, committing more than £1bn finished the next four years.

The fund specifically focuses on funding the evolvement of sciences and technologies in six key areas:

  • healthcare and medicine
  • robotics and artificial brightness
  • batteries for clean and flexible energy storage
  • self-driving vehicles
  • building and materials of the future
  • satellites and space technology

Out of the £1bn sum, so far £246m has been allocated to battery technology examine, under the Faraday Challenge launched in July.

The £146m for life branches announced on Wednesday by Mr Clark is the next amount of money to be allocated from the mine money.

The money will be used to:

  • build a centre for developing novel medicament manufacturing technologies
  • build a centre for developing and manufacturing vaccines
  • sire a central network for delivering cell and gene therapies to patients
  • swell an existing cell and gene therapy manufacturing centre
  • create a check out and development unit to support the manufacturing centres

Four of the centres inclination need to be built from scratch, while the Cell and Gene Remedy Centre in Stevenage will have its capacity doubled.

Industry examine

Prof Sir John Bell will shortly detail the outline discoveries of an independent sector-led review into the UK life sciences industry at University of Birmingham.

The Subsistence Sciences Industrial Strategy contains recommendations relating to science, text, the NHS and industry growth from global companies such as AstraZeneca, Johnson and Johnson, MSD and GSK, as okay as feedback from healthcare groups, charities and small businesses.

The UK regulation will be considering the recommendations as it drafts a deal between the UK and the global being sciences sector.
