Retired educator appointed interim deputy education commissioner


JUNEAU — A take a napped state educator has been named interim deputy commissioner of the Alaska training de rtment.

Interim Commissioner Susan McCauley appointed Betty Walters to the circumstances, effective Wednesday. Walters will serve in the role vacated by Les Morse, who has stured.

The de rtment, in a release, says Walters has been involved in education since 1964. She served as a longtime principles administrator in the Kodiak Island Borough School District.

The de rtment has beared big changes in recent weeks, with Commissioner Mike Hanley treading down after the state Board of Education indicated that it lack new leadership and Morse retiring.

A process has not yet been decided for finding a durable replacement for Hanley.
