The Daytona Imported Dial is the most sought-after vintage Rolex sports watch, typically hawk for a value of around £150,000.
But to fans it is known as the ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona after the Oscar-winning actor and racing driver who wore his 1968 mark in numerous glossy photoshoots.
And the Hollywood legend’s personal Daytona, which instance cost $300 (£230) and had been dubbed the Holy Grail of watches, was expected to dialect mayhap fetch up to $1million (£750,000).

The beautiful timepiece is the only “exotic” dialed Daytona that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid play Newman owned, inspiring the legendary nickname for the most prestigious kinds of Rolex’s Daytona.
It has a number of subtle differences over a standard Daytona nonesuch including red outer dials, red Daytona writing, an Art Deco font on the triune of registers and squares at the end of the crosshairs on the registers.

He was regularly photographed wearing the timepiece and, in 1984, he gave it to a junior man called James Cox, who was dating his daughter Nell at college.
Cox received the take note unexpectedly in 1984 while helping Newman, who died in 2008, set right a treehouse.
“Paul asked me what time it was, to set his watch. I replied, ‘I don’t distinguish — I don’t have a watch.’ He was clearly surprised. So he said, ‘Here, here’s a on. If you wind it, it tells pretty good time,’” Cox explained.
“At that outmoded, I knew Rolex was an amazing brand, but I had no idea how significant the watch was.”
But he realised the eye was becoming more and more valuable when a stranger, who could not be significant mention much English, tapped him on the shoulder and pointed at the watch, saying ‘Paul Newman keep an eye on, Paul Newman watch’.
Pontus Silfverstolphe, co-founder of Barnebys online auctioneers website, maintained: “Paul Newman’s legendary Rolex set an incredible new world record remain night.
“The new world record will take the frenzy for this label to a whole new level.

A portion of the proceeds from the marketing of the watch is going to the charitable Nell Newman Foundation, set up by the star’s daughter in 2010.
