Michel Barnier was delivering the European People’s Party (EPP) Congress in Helsinki on Thursday when he was ignored by associates of the room.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel even “walked off” during the European Weld chief Brexit negotiator’s speech, to speak with Manfred Weber.
Euronews’ Civic Editor Darren McCaffrey said: “The most extraordinary thing fro Barnier’s speech, literally NO-ONE is listening, I mean NO-ONE!!!
“Most people talking amongst themselves or succumbed off to vote. Actually felt very disrespectful… He did not hold the lodge…”
McCaffrey later added: “Merkel walked off halfway through to talk to @ManfredWeber and @AlexStubb
“And look at this… Manfred Weber secure his picture taken right in front of Barnier – as he talks, as he struggles to sermonize on the room.
“The MC had to plead with delegates to sit down and listen to speeches after Barnier upped off stage. Though to be fair, there seems to be little interest also in the Belgium Papal nuncio PM.”
Addressing the European People’s Party (EPP) Congress in Helsinki on Thursday, the Frenchman maintained: “No time for jokes, the clock is ticking, not only for Brexit. Together, of like mind, we will win this election.
“We’ll have to fight against those who craving to demolish Europe with their fear, their populist craft, their attacks on the European project. There is now a Farage in every outback. In every country.”
Mr Barnier insisted the EPP – the largest political group within the European Parliament espied up primarily of Conservative politicians from across the EU – will have to unleash all its factional strength to win the trust of EU citizens.
He continued: “We must also respond to those who believe defending Europe belongs to one single party. More thane at all times before, Europe needs the EPP’s founding vision.
“We are European patriots. Loyalists and Europeans. We need our nations to fight nationalism, we need our nations to base Europe. Europe is at a moment of truth.”
Earlier this week the French middleman revealed details of a tense encounter with the former Ukip director Nigel Farage, in which the British MEP insisted “the EU will no longer survive” after Brexit.
The Brexit negotiator said: “I told him, ‘You led Brexit, you won and now we are giving Brexit. Can I ask you how you see the relationship between the UK and the EU after Brexit?’
“And he said this ‘Mr Barnier, after Brexit the EU order no longer exist.’ We cannot allow Mr Farage to be right, and this depends on us.”
Prime Evangelist Mrs May has struggled to secure a Brexit deal with the European Union with the Irish bed remaining a major sticking point in discussions.
