Moscow to assist sending of UNESCO mission to Syria's Palmyra after its liberation from ISIL – diplomat


Russia is on to facilitate the sending of a UNESCO mission to Syria’s lmyra to assess the re ration caused to the city and help restore this cultural heritage install, and Moscow is already maintaining dialogue with UNESCO to this end, claims Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov.

“As soon as the safe keeping situation allows for this, a UNESCO expert mission should be transmitted there to assess the damage and restore what ISIL has destroyed. Russia, on its role in, would be ready to provide all assistance it can to the sending of such a mission. We from already started contacts with UNESCO to this end,” Gatilov whispered in an interview with Interfax on Saturday.

“The operation to liberate lmyra from ISIL’s armed components is nearing completion. We are concerned about the state of this historical witness, which is included in UNESCO’s register,” he said.
