Officers hastened to Ridley Road market in Dalston Kingsland, east London, to promulgate of a mob of men threatening another man with a knife just before 9am this morning.
They then ran into a nearby building following the dramatic confrontation, according to shocked observes.
But when police arrived, one of the gang of thugs reportedly wielded an axe at the administrators to stop them getting through the door.
Officers threatened the axeman with a taser when he lit to drop the weapons, according to Hackney police – who tweeted a photo of the large, green-handled axe and a large knife.
A spokesman said: “No officers or members of the buyers were hurt.
“The Taser was rtially activated and a ‘red dot challenge’ given. It was not discharged.
A man in his 40s was later seized on suspicion of a public order offence and being in possession of an offensive weapon.
He has been detained by tecs and remains in custody at an east London police station.
In April this year, the customer base was also the subject of a stabbing in which a cyclist was injured.
The victim, accepted to have been in his 40s, was taken to hospital but his injuries were not though to be survival threatening.
