Commuters have been warned to expect delays after flights were dangled when the alert was triggered.
Those already onboard their glides were left stranded on the runway as emergency services evacuated the maximum at around 6.45pm.
One passenger tweeted: «However now London City Airport is being evacuated due to feeling alarm so they aren’t letting us off the plane. Tin can rattling violently.»
After arriving at the prospect socialize, fire crews discovered the alert had been a false alarm.
An airport spokesman said delays for the rest of the day are likely.
