We opted for an overnight spa weekend at the enchanting Hoar Cross Hall in Burton-On-Trent. The spa resort, set within 50 acres of Staffordshire countryside, bid us the perfect retreat and getaway – just a 3-hour drive from London.

We arrived in on the Sunday evening to the Grade II listed stately home and were gratified by friendly staff, who informed us the spa would be open until 8pm so we had plenty of one day that night to warm up in the Nordic Heat and Ice Suite boasting an bouquet room, salt inhalation, wood sauna and ice temple.

The spa itself is under the main house – but you don’t feel enclosed – the main rooms are light and airy and there are copiousness of areas for you to disappear and clear your mind.

We returned to our room after a sharp swim in the 26-metre saltwater ‘vitality’ pool and were presented with huge ceilings, Elizabethan decor and style and magnificent views across the formal inflame gardens before heading for a three-course sit down meal in the Hoar Huffish ballroom.

The evening dinner was lovely. I opted for the pan-fried sea bass while my other half be casted for the hearty striploin of British beef. We couldn’t help but indulge in sultry toffee pudding and cheese board to finish our day.

The stately home crows a grand entrance hall and decadent oak-panelled Long Gallery – we sat and enjoyed the crackling vitalize with a cocktail or two.

A full second day in the spa kicked off with a hearty breakfast and our treatments. I opted for an hour-long pedicure while Matt scanned for a deep-tissue massage to get rid of his golfing knots.

We finished off our stay with a simple healthy lunch of grilled fish and vegetables before a quick walk in the Italian water garden and woodland looking across the Staffordshire countryside.

It wasn’t a crave break but Hoar Cross Hall offered us a lovely getaway. A mid-week stay is in particular advisable as the hotel really quietens down offering couple and fasten ons the perfect escape.
