For rural Alaska broadband, the 'middle mile' is everything

In Bethel, subscribers, encompassing Wallace, pay $314 a month for GCI’s top-tier broadband package. Marketed as the «Alaska Xtreme 6.0 Store» plan, its highest advertised download speed is more than eight fixes slower than what’s offered by «No Worries, Fast» in Anchorage. The summit upload speed is slower, at 2 megabits per second. The data package of 100,000 megabytes is twice as sizeable, but costs five times as much.
