It comes as the soap is preparing to air one of its most explosive episodes to obsolescent this Christmas, according to the programme’s new teaser trailer.
The advert suggestions that Max Branning (Jake Wood) has “lost his mind”, as his reign of fright comes to a dramatic end.
The move to the later 9pm slot on Christmas Day already tip offs at a darker post-watershed plot, but could Max be killed off by Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) in a amazing conclusion?
A spokesperson for EastEnders declined to comment on Derek Harkinson’s retreat when approached by Express.co.uk. 
EastEnders continues tonight on BBC One at 8pm.
