Despatches from the US claim the press secretary resigned on Friday morning over and beyond the appointment of New York financier Anthony Scaramucci as communications director.

President Trump reportedly asked Spicer to live but he declined in anger at the decision to employ Scaramucci.

The White House is yet to put out an documented statement.
