Block of flats COLLAPSES as massive fire spreads to Sainsburys — Shoppers evacuated

The give someone notice is believed to have broke out at a block of flats near Sainsbury’s in Chafford Hundred justified before 5pm this evening.

Dramatic pictures show as the huge flames whisk into the air, from what appears to be a car park between the supermarket and the heaths.

Fire crews raced to this scene this evening but tease confirmed the apartment block has since collpased in the fire, with the supermarket being relinquished as the flames try to spread.

Images from the scene also show dense, black plumes of smoke billowing above the blaze — which can level pegging be seen from Kent.

Lee Hayes, from Kent, spotted the smoke from across the Thames and commanded Essex Live: «We watched the smoke rise but we’re in Kent.

«We’re not quite convinced what’s happened or where but we suspect it’s Lakeside or somewhere in that precinct.»

Others took to Twitter to post harrowing photos and videos of the fiery building, and warning others to stay away from the area.

@_r00_ scribbled: «What’s happened at lakeside? Monstrous fire there, could see the smoke from dartford, looked bad as I passed it.»

@jodieechong express: «Can’t believe how big the fire is near lakeside».

The fire engulfed a block of studios and a nearby Sainsburys in Thurrock

Police have warned people to linger away from the area while emergency services deal with the commotion.

A staff member at the Brewer’s Fayre restaurant, attached to the nearby Leading Inn, said a disused building behind Sainsbury’s was alight.

Essex Whip up has since confirmed the blaze has spread to athe Sainsbury’s supermarket, combining nine fire engines had been scrambled to the «major incident».

A spokesman affirmed: «The derelict building, which measures approximately 20m x 20m, has collapsed.

«The fire is choosing the rear of the neighbouring supermarket, which measures approximately 60m x 60m.

«The officer in attack reports that the fire is under control. The supermarket has been fully vented so crews can deal with the incident safely.»

Both Sainsburys and the nearby Bannatyne Health Club has been deserted.

A spokesman said: “We have evacuated the club to ensure the safety of our fellows and thank them for their understanding. We will take advice from the give someone the bounce service during the evening.”

Traffic is being affected as fire motors are believed to have closed the road.

An Essex Police spokesman communicated: «Police are assisting the fire service at the scene of a fire in a derelict construction in Howard Road, Chafford Hundred. 

«Officers were made conscious shortly before 5pm today, Tuesday September 12. Sainsbury’s and Bannatyne Well-being Club have been evacuated while firefighters deal with the fire.

The fire broke out near Lakeside Shopping Centre

«Freeway closures are in place in Burghley Road; on the A1306 between the Treacle Pit and Sainsbury’s; and the A1306 between Arena Essex and Burghley Road. 

«Drivers are prayed to avoid the area and are thanked for their patience. 

«Police and the fire appointment will carry out a joint investigation to establish the cause of the fire.»

The smoke is demanded to impact on traffic around Essex and London, after an accident on the M25 clockwise carriageway is occasioning long delays at the Dartford Crossing

The collision happened between meeting 1A and junction 1B, with traffic congestion as far back as junction 30 for the A13 and Basildon.
